Creating Space

As I lead my yoga students through a practice, I use the term "Create space in your body". Creating space in the body, in the pose, allows us to take the pose deeper while allowing a flow of energy. I am sure that most have heard "side body long" or "lengthen from the hips to the armpits" both are verbal cues to create space.
When we create space, energy can flow and the same holds true for the spaces around us. Time spent outdoors, in wide open spaces, is beneficial for our well-being. Purging our homes and offices of clutter and unneeded items removes things that no longer serve us and should best be disposed of, removed from our surroundings. The act of disposing of items that no longer serve us creates a space that allows us to live in the present moment.
I spent time this morning cleaning out old records and files in my office. Much of what was discarded was from jobs and companies where I no longer worked. The act of holding on enabled me to live in the past, so I filled up a trash bag and out with the old. After pitching old files and work, I created a space that supports my new ventures, a place where I am able to focus on a new life journey without distraction.
